As we near the third trimester, we want to further prepare our learners for success in 7th grade, 8th grade, and high school. As a result, we will be focusing on the following ROAR expectations: being on time to class, having all materials, and using technology properly. Please see the attached document for specific information regarding these ROAR expectations in all sixth grade classrooms. We have explained this focus to learners and we appreciate your support!

Dear 5th and 6th Grade families,

It’s that time of year! JSerra will host their 3rd Annual Spelling Bee on January 30th!  As of now there will be eight schools competing in this year’s big event, including the defending champion Mission Basilica. In order to select participants to represent St. Edward the Confessor in this competition, your learner will participate in an in-class spelling bee. This will take place in their reading classes on Wednesday, January 16th. The learners should prepare themselves by studying the attached list of spelling words. If there are any questions please contact me at [email protected]. Happy studying and Let’s Go Monarchs!!

In Service,

Rhobley Montelongo

In preparation for our class spelling bee, learners should write or type unknown words from the word list by tomorrow, Friday the 11th. In class on Friday we will work with these words and talk about strategies for studying spelling. As a reminder, our in-class spelling bee is next Wednesday, the 16th!

Learners were assigned an in-class project after completing their nonfiction books. The class will present their completed posters with their book club grous on Wednesday, the 19th during Reading class. The project asks learners to gather details from the text and explain how these details contribute to the central idea. The project rubric is attached. 20 points will go to the learners' Reading grade weight and the other 25 points will go to the Speaking & Listening grade weight.

ATTENTION 6TH GRADE: Due to the number of tests on Monday, Mrs. Keown will be postponing her vocabulary test until after Christmas break. It will be on Tuesday, January 8th.

If you would like to take your test before break, Mrs. Keown will be available during lunch next Tuesday, the 18th in Room 221

Due:

Assignment

Learners will be writing about their reading so far in their nonfiction texts. Learners can use their annotations and book club discussion notes to help respond to the following prompt:

1. Find three details from your nonfiction text
2. Explain how these details fit together and begin to develop the central idea.

We practiced this in class last Thursday, learners were given feedback, and examples were shown the following class period.

Assignment

Below are corrections to this week's newsletter:

1) There is no vocabulary test this week. The study guide on Google Classroom is due this Friday, the 30th and the test on those words is the following Friday, the 7th.

2) We are still waiting on our final shipment of books for our nonfiction unit. This means there is not yet one book for each learner. The rest of the books will arrive by this Friday, the 30th. Due to this delay, I will not be requiring learners to read at home until they receive their own copy of the book on Friday. All required nonfiction reading this week will take place in the classroom during workshop time. All annotations this week will be taken in in-class reading notebooks.

Tomorrow, learners will choose the books they would like to read during this unit. Attached is the list of books to choose from.

Due:

Assignment

Learners will take their end-of-unit reading test in two parts on Tuesday, October 6th and Wednesday, October 7th. Attached is study material for this assessment.

The questions and sample responses attached are based on the novel Okay for Now. Though the test questions and format will be the same, the learners will be responding using a different text. They will not know what this text is until the day of the assessment. Learners will not be given the bullet points on the actual assessment, so they need to know what to include for each question.

Some ways to study for this assessment are by making flashcards for the bullet points on each question, practicing writing a sample response, and/or reading through the sample responses and highlighting where each bullet point was answered.
