Text: Family Life – Grade Five

Fifth grade is a big year where learners are growing physically, spiritually, and emotionally.  Through the study of the Sacraments and Sacred Scripture, fifth graders will learn what Catholics believe, how Catholics worship, how Catholics live, and how Catholics pray.  This is a special year because as learners are getting older, they are taking what they have learned and forming their own ideas and beliefs.  Students will participate in prayer several times a day, strengthening their relationship with God.  Opportunities for scripture meditation will be given where learners will think about what the scripture means to them and how they can apply it to their own daily life.  Feasts and seasons of the liturgical year will also be discussed and celebrated.  Family Life is a moral catechesis for families and children that presents virtues for Catholic living and addresses complex issues of contemporary life. Parents and their learners will “preview” the textbook lessons at home prior to our classroom discussions. Learners will reflect on and decide on ways to integrate into their lives five themes in Catholic family living:

  1. God’s Gift of Family
  2. God’s Gift of Self
  3. God’s Gift of Life
  4. God’s Gift of Love
  5. God’s Gift of Community

Fifth grade is also an important time when learners have the opportunity to be trained as altar servers. Altar Serving applications will be available at Back to School Night.  If you need the application after Back to School Night, please contact your learner’s homeroom teacher.
