TYKE-1st Grade Standard-Based Physical Education Homepage

Welcome to St. Edward "Physical" "Education"-- from a Catholic perspective! Our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit; we should remember this first and foremost. We have a standards-based physical education program that teaches students to move in the physical world around them. We teach about the body, motion, bio-mechanics, nutrition, motor learning, setting and achieving goals. Students participate in skill-related and health-related activities in their own space, with partners, peer groups, and cross-age tutors. The focus is on helping others through cooperation, teamwork, problem-solving, and stewardship. Being good stewards by developing the talents and gifts God gave them is our students challenge. Sharing their gifts for the good of others in their faith community and the secular communities around them is an important aspect of being Catholic.

"To give and not count the cost, to toil and not seek reward."
--St. Ignatius of Loyola

Physical Education teaches all students to care for their bodies in all situations. This includes how to respect life, fall properly, wiggle, dodge, roll or climb to escape a dangerous situation. Students learn how to properly condition their body to avoid common injuries, illnesses, and disease. Studies show that people who regularly participate in physical activities can add seven years to their lifespans!
Brain-based learning tells us the facts about physical education, physical
activity waking up the brain to embed the information to become life-long
learners.

We teach students about Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA), Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE), Nutrient Density, Energy Balance and Physics in Motion.

Our Motto: HAVE FUN! Play Hard! Play Fair! Play Safe!

"Physical fitness is an intrinsic part of the educational process, not something to be sidelined or avoided. Our educators need to understand that physical education is just as essential to a student's academic success as reading, writing and arithmetic."
- Dr. Robert K. Ross, M.D., President, CEO, California Endowment
