Welcome to 6th Grade!

Sixth grade is an exciting year as students switch classes each period, have their own Chromebook, and get ready for their first multi-day overnight camp. One of the curriculum themes is early civilizations. Through both traditional learning as well as integrative collaborations in STEM, literature, religion and art, the class explores the history, people, geography, culture and religions from early hunter/gatherer societies, all the way through the mighty Chinese and Roman Empires. Learning is enriched through several hands-on events, including Greek Day, a field trip to the Bower Museum and the Walk Through the Ancient World interactive presentation.

In English Language Arts, learners analyze and annotate novels through three units - characters, non-fiction and book clubs focused on social justice issues. Writing and grammar also focuses on three core units - narrative, literary and persuasive. The students vocabulary is enhanced through weekly exercises in Membean, an authentic program utilized by many high schools.

The highlight of the sixth grade year is attending the three day/two night Pali Science Camp in the San Berndadino mountains. Pali offers hands-on science curriculum and team building skills. The experience complements the year's science program on earth science, including geology, ocean currents, climate, and the solar system. In math, learners deepen their knowledge of sixth grade standards in preparation for pre-algebra and algebra, including ratios, negative numbers, factions, common factors, algebraic concepts, area/volume and coordinate planes.
